As New England headhunters, Stewart Staffing knows that searching for a new job can be overwhelming. When you check out the local job boards, there might be hundreds of different opportunities that come back in your search results. It can therefore feel like a job just trying to figure out the which positions you should be applying to.
The good news is that if you plan ahead and do a little work, you can make this process a lot easier, so it doesn’t become a major time-suck. Here’s what you need to know:
List out your skills.
When you’re looking for a new job, you might just start searching using your old job title. But is that what you really want; the same kind of job you already have? If not, then create a list of your skills and abilities that you believe to be your strengths. Then use those as search terms, rather than a job title. The results will likely be more targeted and aligned with what you’re looking for.
Use online filters.
When you’re using job boards to search out postings, put the filters, such as for salary and location, to use. When you do, you can cut down on the number of results you get, making the process less overwhelming. You can also get a list of positions that are a better fit for your needs and career goals.
Search by company.
You might have some definite ideas about the kind of employer you’re most interested in working for. If you do, then use their name in the search feature to find out about job postings specific to their company. Even if they don’t currently have any jobs that you’re a fit for, you can set up alerts so you find out faster when a new opportunity comes along.
Don’t forget about related jobs.
When you find a position you’re interested in, job boards often list related jobs right next to the posting. So don’t forget to take a look at these. There are often opportunities that you might not have uncovered on your own and the exact right position for you could be listed there.
